TECH HUB Interconnected Savannah
Long-time followers of this site and supporters of my campaign are fully aware that among my top priorities as Savannah's next mayor is turning this town into a tech hub by way of providing a high-speed-fiber network. This cause has a champion in Chris Miller, CEO of Illuminomics, who spent a considerable amount of time, effort, energy and money in clearly demonstrating a demand for the network and building a community coalition in support of it. However, it was at the level of local government that the process broke down, largely due to an inability to UNDERSTAND the issue, so says Mr. Miller in a letter to supporters.
What our city government has failed to understand is that "a high-speed-fiber network provides a perfect opportunity for this town to move beyond its narrow economic diversity, low-wage economic focus and rapidly growing digital divide," in Miller's words. "Other communities are embracing the idea of an aggregated-demand co-op model as a means of overcoming the traditional telco dominance that limits higher-wage economic diversity and growth."
Miller pins his hopes for further development of a fiber network on the results of the local election in 39 days. But as for now, he has packed up and left Savannah in order to go forward in more receptive towns...and Savannah's brain drain continues to flow away.
Meanwhile, I'm still here, running for mayor, the last man standing for Change in a town that simply refuses to move forward. As your next mayor, I am committed to hi tech; I've said so since the beginning of this campaign.
